One of the best parts of living in the Pacific Northwest isn’t just having a home you love, it’s having incredible outdoor adventures right in your backyard. If you’re looking for a day trip with big views, I’ve got the perfect place for you. The Oyster Dome Trail should be at the top of your list. It delivers stunning views, fresh air, and a chance to reconnect with nature.
A Pacific Northwest Treasure
Located within the scenic Blanchard State Forest, Oyster Dome is one of the most iconic hikes in Northwest Washington. The trail rewards hikers with panoramic views of the San Juan Islands, Samish Bay, and the surrounding coastline, making it a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike.
On a clear day, you’ll find yourself standing atop a rocky overlook, taking in a breathtaking landscape that perfectly captures the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
The Perfect Short-Day Trip from Mount Vernon
One of the best things about Oyster Dome is how accessible it is. It is approximately 20 miles from Mount Vernon. Making it about a 30-minute drive from Mount Vernon. The trailhead is located just south of Bellingham in Blanchard State Forest, making it an easy morning or afternoon adventure for Skagit County residents. You can leave Mount Vernon after breakfast, enjoy a hike, grab lunch in nearby Edison or Bow, and still be home before dinner. Some of my favorites place to stop after a hike is Taylor Shellfish and Chuckanut Manor.
Trail Information
The most popular route begins at the Samish Overlook area and is approximately:
- 5 miles round trip.
- About 1,000 feet elevation gain.
- Moderate difficulty.
- Ranges from 2.5–4 hours to hike.
The trail winds through lush evergreen forest, towering cedar trees, moss-covered landscapes, and peaceful woodland scenery before opening to the spectacular viewpoint.
*For my favorite hike, I actually start from the road on Chuckanut Drive which is a little harder. Starting from here adds 1.5 miles to the trail junction to Samish lookout and adds 900 ft of gain.
